Installing the Broadcom driver worked like a charm although I did not have a bluescreen but a breaking network connection when doing heavy downloads on Steam et al. After doing this Ethernet seems snappier and has not yet crashed.
After installing Win 8.1 the systems disconnets from the internet from time to time.

I tried removing certain networking components that I thought might be causing trouble like VMware bridge and Link-Layer stuff, but that just hangs the Ethernet Properties dialog box requiring a hard power-off. I wrote too soon. In reply to AP57’s post on November 9, If the Software has been delivered by Intel on physical media, Intel warrants the media to be free from material physical defects broascom a period of ninety days after delivery by Intel.
At a minimum such license shall safeguard Intel’s ownership rights to the Software.
